1. Cut a piece of plywood to a size that would fit our bed frame and was the height we wanted.
2. Measured out the hole spacing and used a drill to make the holes. I enlisted John's help for this, because I have found my patience for making things perfect is not great. He helped measure and then drilled all the holes for me.
3. Used spray tack to glue 1" foam to the board.
4. Wrap the board in 2 layers of batting and staple to the back.
5. Wrap and stretch fabric around the back of the headboard.
This is the point that I started taking pictures. Below is a partially tufted headboard. I started from the middle, so It wouldn't pull the fabric funny.
I had made the buttons previously, using the pillowcase that came with the duvet cover (this is what I used for the fabric. To attach the buttons, I used a very large needle to poke through from the back of the headboard, attach the button, and then pull it back through. The string is a waxed string that I had doubled over. I used waxed string so it would be easier to tie when I got it back through.
The back of the headboard looks exactly like you would think, a piece of plywood with a bunch of holes in it. I had to use skewers to keep the string from going back through the other side.
The fabric wrapped around the back was pretty messy while I worked on it, but I trimmed it before setting it up on the bed.
This is what it looked like when I was finished tufting it. The upper right corner was a little wonky when I stepped back and looked at it. Luckily, it is very easy to fix. It just took a little tug and a quick shot with the nail gun.
It isn't attached to the bed yet, but here is a view of it in the room. Next up will be a new duvet cover so we don't have grey on grey, but we are in no rush for that.
