19 weeks. Where do I even begin?

'Well that was unexpected' has been my phrase for this week. Holy moley! Twins were not what I was thinking we would find when we went in for the ultrasound and I am definitely still processing the fact that there are two little nuggets growing in there. I keep telling myself that it will be great, but I think it will take some time for me to fully wrap my head around the concept.

The ultrasound was on Thursday. We went a little earlier than 20 weeks because John's work schedule has been a bit crazy. He is gone the next two weeks, so we wanted to squeeze it in before he was traveling again. The poor ultrasound tech didn't know what she was in for during her last appointment for the day! She started the ultrasound, found one head and then moved across my belly and stopped. She had that look on her face that said 'what the heck?!' and then moved back and forth across my belly a couple of times. I don't think she believed what she was seeing. She said something like 'Ok, so here is one head, and over here is another!' Apparently this was only the second time she has had to tell someone they were having twins. She seemed a bit scared of our reaction, which was 'wait, 2?'. I immediately started laughing. That must be my coping mechanism when inside my head I'm freaking out. She then had to go switch our chart to say 2 babies instead of just one baby, so she left us for a few minutes. Pretty sure I said to John 'you have to be kidding me' while he was grinning ear to ear. He's real proud :)

Our tech came back in and saw that we were still laughing, although again, I think she was scared to see our response! She then continued with all the measurements and looking for the gender of two little ones. I think the whole ultrasound took an hour and fifteen minutes. The twins were being pretty rowdy in there. She was having a hard time getting head measurements because they were so wiggly. I told John I was shocked that his kids wouldn't hold still. :) Both twins are measuring where they should be at this point. One had a due date of September 23 an the other was September 25. Hopefully they keep baking evenly! We are also happy to say we are having one of each. Again, I still am wrapping my head around two, but seeing Jantzen and Emery be best of friends at this stage in their life helps me be a little more excited and a little less freaked out.

After the ultrasound, we started calling family members on the way home. It was fun to hear their reactions and hard not to be excited when everyone is so excited for you. I loved my siblings responses when I sent them pictures of the babies side by side. When we got home, I think a little bit of reality set it. Thank goodness for John being here to be my rock, because my emotions got the best of me. I realized I have to grow two things instead of one and I'm just not real sure I can do it. He reassured me that everything will work out and that now I have one less time of being pregnant! haha

Needless to say, I didn't sleep much Thursday night. I probably fell asleep around 10 and was wide awake at 3:30 with 10,000 thoughts running through my head. I was off to work on Friday morning and shared the news with my boss and co-workers. It was another exciting morning until I got a call from my doctors office. They left me a message asking who I would like to see for my follow up care. When I called them back to say the same doctor I have been seeing, they said 'oh you didn't get the letter? Your doctor retired on Wednesday'. (insert tears here) They gave me a few options, but at that point I was in no shape to make a decision, or really get any work done at all. I tried to hold it together long enough to tell my boss I was leaving, although I think sleep deprivation and too much news in the previous 24 hours was about all I could handle. Again, I was happy that John was home and that my Mom and Becky were available to chat until I got there. I then ate food and started my hunt for a new doctor.

I was hoping to stay with a doctor in that office because that would mean I would have that same one for delivery. I tried to get in with that doctor and found out he doesn't do multiples. I think the lady felt bad for my story about the previous 24 hours and made it her mission to help me for the afternoon. She gave me some options and said my primary care doctor (different than the retiring one) would refer me. I told her I would do some research and texted my sister-in-law Dawn. Dawn was so incredibly helpful considering how much I was freaking out at that moment! Some of the doctors they recommended were the exact ones that she used for her 3 kiddos. Crisis averted! I quickly called back and gave them my top choices. I should get another appointment in the books once my doctor is back on Monday. Whew! Hopefully I won't have any more excitement this week.

In other baby related news (and what I thought I was going to post about before all this fun), my babies are the length of a slice of watermelon this week. I have really been feeling some movement lately, which makes more sense now that I know there are two in there. John was able to feel a kick for the first time last night. It will be fun when he can feel them more frequently. I got a terrible charlie horse this week. I called John up from the basement because I was worried I would fall over if I stood up, but I felt like I needed to try to walk it out. It still hurt two days later. I have been chugging water since then to try to be sure I'm hydrated enough and hopefully can cut down on getting those in the future.

We have had a few projects in the works around the house and wrapped a couple up last weekend. John built a bench for the mudroom. It is a place we can stash all our shoes and also sit down to put them on. It turned out absolutely amazing! We have also been working on a dresser we got for $10 on craigslist. We are 'flipping' it to see how we can do with flipping furniture. We have someone coming to look at it today, so we will see how successful we are :)

Hopefully that is all the exciting news for this week. I think this post is at least triple in length to my previous posts!! Yay for the weekend!!
